Feedback session of the TEN Group Paris study tour

On Wednesday 28 November 2012 the TEN Group met at The Building Centre board room at 6pm and discussed lessons from Paris.  Using a power point presentation (attached) delegates summarized the various aspects of the tour to those who were unable to attend.  Nicholas Falk kicked off the evening by answering, 'why to visit Paris in the first place?'.  Stephen Tapper gave an over view of the two days, followed by Mark Lucas who described in detail Paris Rive Gauche and what aspects could be transferred to central London.  Pat Hayes gave a detailed description of St Denis, an area that he knew

Living Suburbs Symposium; Getting to Copenhagen from West London

In an initiative to increase cycling in West London, on November 1st and 2nd, a delegation of highway engineers and planners from Ealing Council and WestTrans cycled around Copenhagen and learnt how they had got to 37% of trips being made by bike.

P&H Consultation Event

There is a consultation event on Tuesday 27th November from 12-3pm at The Meadows One Stop Shop in the Bridgeway Shopping Centre and from 4-7pm at The Embankment. Representatives of the developers, their design team and the council will be on hand to answer questions.

Brighton and Chichester; Third meeting of series nine of TEN

On October 26th the TEN Group were joined  by planners from Norwich, Cambridge, and Peterborough, as well as London. We examined the progress in meeting zero carbon objectives at the New England Quarter in Brighton (which URBED masterplanned) and Graylingwell Park in Chichester, one of the members of the Sustainable Urban Neighbourhoods Network. The visit confirmed the importance of matching the standards and practices to the location, and of adopting appropriate parking policies.

 

2up2down - cake models and art festivals

Following a lot of intensive work over the summer by all involved, the first phase of works at 199 Oakfield Road is now complete! This mini-fit out has given us the luxury of a space for meetings and workshops that the wind doesn't blow through (and even some plush new indoor loos). The works involved creating a new opening between the shop and the kitchen - so when the building is back in use as a bakery full time, customers can see where their bread has been baked.

Summon the courage to free our Cities

How can the UK build its way out of the hole left by the collapse of major banks? Dr Nicholas Falk recently wrote an article for the Fabian Society; Summon the courage to free our cities.  This draws on a range of URBED research and study tours to European cities to suggest the answer lies in issuing municipal bonds to get sites ready for house-builders large and small.  Read the article here
