Spode Production Space - the 'China Halls'

The first phase of bringing the Spode works back into use is to house the British Ceramics Biennial, transforming the former production halls into a new exhibition space for Stoke. These will then allow access to spaces around that can form studio spaces for artsist and other businesses not wanting hi-spec space. The BCB filled 40,000sq,ft with a vast array of ceramics from international artists to stokes surviving ceramics industry. urbed designed and procurred the 'Great Wall' to accommodate the exhibits from industry  - still producing a considerable breadth and quantity.

Wolfson Economics Prize 2014

In 2014 URBED was awarded the 2014 Wolfson Prize. The study posed the question; ‘How would you deliver a new garden city which is visionary, economically viable, and popular’.

Some fine streets are spoiled by clutter

Park Street is Walsall’s premier shopping area. Its scale, buildings and proportion are the equal of many ‘big city’ shopping streets, and it retains a good range of retail brands. Overall, it remains a successful example of a pedestrianised high street precinct. However, the form and function is badly spoiled by an excess of intrusive street furniture. 

Masterplan Update

There has been considerable progress on the campus masterplan with various new buildings and public realm being completed.

Bus Tour

As part of our work with local communities we have run a number of bus tours around a variety of new projects within Manchester. The tour provides an opportunity to see different projects that track development from Hulme through to the present day.

URBED's Routemaster Bus

The bus made its debut in Rochdale for URBED's work in the Inner Rochdale neighbourhoods, it has since gone on to do urban design tours of Manchester, consultations in Sheffield and a stint north of the border for Irvine Bay. It has also had the honour of escorting the entire URBED team on to a number of events and has even made an appearance at a wedding or two . A truly magnificent steed.

South Workington ECO Plan

URBED recently ran a two-day workshop with the people of South Workington to develop an ‘eco’ plan for their neighbourhood.

Vertical Farm Launch @ MIF 2011

Alpha Farm was officially launched yesterday at the Vertical Farm event at Manchester International Festival. The event chaired by Steve Conner welcomed  Dickson Despommier to the UK to discuss his seminal ideas around vertical farming.
