Here is an article on the launch of URBED's masterplan for Old Trafford.

"A multi-million pound regeneration project has been launched in the Old Trafford area of Manchester, close to the iconic home stadium of Manchester United.

The Old Trafford Masterplan will take 10 years to complete and will provide a mix of social and affordable housing, community regeneration and environmental improvements.

The project was officially launched yesterday when a ceremonial stone was laid at the site of a new social housing development, Essex Way, which will provide 29 houses and 33 two-bedroom flats for affordable rent. Trafford council provided the land for the scheme and has financed it with support from the Homes and Communities Agency's (HCA) Affordable Homes Programme.

The Masterplan aims to have built around 100 homes by 2014. Outline planning permission has also been granted for further new homes on the Tamworth estate, where the Trust will soon be demolishing four tower blocks.

Split into nine pockets of development in the Old Trafford area - Tamworth, Ayres Road Gateway, Hullard Neighbourhood, The Rivers Neighbourhood, The Cliftons Neighbourhood, Shrewsbury Street, Stretford Road, Fahey’s Depot and St. George’s Gate - the Masterplan is redeveloping areas in the top 10% of the UK's most deprived.

Matthew Gardiner, Chief Executive of Trafford Housing Trust, said:
“The Old Trafford Masterplan will breathe new life into an area that in the past has experienced under investment. After years of planning, we are delighted to be working with the council to bring our joint vision to full fruition."

Councillor Michael Hyman added: “It is a tremendous honour to be laying the ceremonial stone that marks the launch of this multi-million pound urban regeneration project in Old Trafford.

“This is something the Trafford Council, Trafford Housing Trust and, most importantly, the local community has wanted to see happen and it is fantastic that such a positive and ambitious plan can be realised, and is being successfully delivered by the Council and Trafford Housing Trust.”
