We're recruiting a Retrofit Designer!

We are looking for someone with skills in low carbon building design and retrofit to join the retrofit team at URBED. 

 

Deadline: 10am on Monday 18th January 2021

 

Salary: £25,290 - £32,020, 35 hour work-week, dependent on skills and experience.

Contract: 0.6-1.0 Full Time Equivalent. Part-time and flexible working will be considered. 

Location: Central Manchester, largely covering projects in the North West and Yorkshire. 

Status: Permanent, following 6 month probationary period. PAYE.

Academic qualifications: Degree in Architectural Technology, Architecture, Building Surveying or a related discipline. Equivalent experience will be considered. 

Experience: Minimum of one year in a relevant setting. 

 

About the Role

You will be involved in a variety of projects - from community and commercial buildings, to large-scale multi-home retrofit projects in the public sector, and one-off domestic retrofit projects through our People Powered Retrofit service collaboration with Carbon Co-op. You will be expected to work across all stages of project development, from assessment and scoping to technical design, construction, handover, and evaluation. We are looking for someone with a good understanding of responsible low carbon retrofit techniques. You should be able to consider all aspects of building physics and materials selection to produce successful technical designs that perform well. Most of our architectural and retrofit projects are based in the North of England. Though this role is office-based, you will be expected to travel to project sites from time to time to carry out surveys and inspect construction work. 

 

About URBED

URBED (Urbanism, Environment and Design) Ltd (www.urbed.coop) is an award-winning design and research consultancy based in Manchester. In the last decade we have developed a national reputation for our innovative work in whole house retrofit. This has included design work on building projects, as well as developing policy, systems, and tools to support retrofit. Our office is in central Manchester, but at the moment we are predominantly working from home, using a number of tools to aid collaboration as we work remotely. We are a fully mutual employee-owned cooperative and company limited by guarantee. Our employee members each have a £1 share and we make business decisions collectively. Essential Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • High level of literacy, numeracy, and computer literacy. 
  • Degree in architecture, architectural technology, building surveying, or related discipline. 
  • Highly proficient in CAD and with good working knowledge of BIM processes. (Vectorworks preferred, but training on this will be offered if required).
  • Experience of carrying out surveys of existing buildings for refurbishment. 
  • Experience of using energy assessment tools such as SAP, RdSAP, PHPP. 
  • Good technical design skills and ability to apply the principles of responsible retrofit. 
  • Good knowledge of the range of construction techniques and materials present in UK buildings. 
  • Good knowledge of sustainable design principles.

 

Desirable Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Retrofit or low carbon design specific qualification such as: AECB CarbonLite Retrofit, Retrofit Co-ordination Level 5 Diploma, CEPH Designer/Consultant/Trades, or an MSc in a relevant discipline. 
  • Direct experience of design and delivery of deep whole house retrofit projects. 
  • Experience of using software tools to analyse the thermal bridging or moisture performance of designs, e.g. THERM and WUFI. 
  • Experience of use of ICT tools to support quality assurance in design and construction. 
  • Qualification in conservation and/or experience of working on traditionally constructed buildings. 
  • Experience of building performance and post occupancy evaluation. 
  • Experience of the specification and use of low carbon materials in construction.
