SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTANT
Grade: Junior/Intermediate level
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic sustainability consultant to join our groundbreaking team of urban designers, planners, architects and sustainability experts . The successful applicant will work across a wide range of projects in both the domestic and commercial sectors, from single buildings to masterplans and urban strategies. They will have a strong interest in making our towns and cities more sustainable. This role is wide ranging and will include providing support for our urban design work, carrying out stand-alone consultancy projects, and helping to deliver our low-energy building retrofit work.
Role:
- Managing and preparing bespoke sustainability assessments for a variety of developments.
- Assisting in the development of sustainability and energy strategies to support our masterplanning work and for individual buildings.
- Environmental and energy modelling at building and urban scale.
- Energy certification and resource use benchmarking
- Preparation of high quality reports for a range of audiences
- Assisting delivery of our building retrofit work
- Assisting in the evaluation of ‘as built’ performance of developments
REQUIREMENTS//
Academic qualifications: BSc / BEng (or postgraduate degree) in an appropriate built environment / sustainability / building services discipline.
Professional Experience: At least two years of relevant experience
Key skills:
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Good analytical and research skills (ability to detect ‘greenwash’).
- High level of numeracy and computer literacy
- Self driven and able to work independently with excellent organisational skills.
- Ability to contribute to a team environment containing a broad range of skills and backgrounds.
- Meticulous attention to detail in own work and the work of others.
- Interest in urban design and built environment generally.
- Ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, from industry experts to individual householders
- Experience and understanding of energy benchmarking and design tools (e.g. SAP, rdSAP, SBEM, PHPP, TM22 etc)
- Excellent use and understanding of spreadsheets including calculations (e.g. excel, numbers)
- Good understanding of the policy and regulatory context of sustainability in the built environment
- Some knowledge and understanding of building physics
- Some knowledge and understanding of building systems and services
- Some knowledge and understanding of renewable energy technologies
- Knowledge of UK construction methods and practices
Desirable skills:
- Interest in and understanding of urban systems and resource flows
- Experience of Computer AIded Design software (e.g. AutoCAD)
- Experience and understanding of energy simulation softwares (e.g. Ecotect, IES, EnergyPlus, EnergyBuilder)
- Qualified Domestic Energy Assessor/Green Deal Advisor
- Experience of retrofit projects in the domestic and/or non domestic sector
- Knowledge and understanding of thermal bridging calculations and software (e.g. therm)
- Experience of Building Performance Evaluation and/or Post Occupancy Evaluation
- Experience of qualitative and quantitative research methods - surveys, evaluations and physical monitoring of buildings
- Experience of making presentations to a range of audiences

Employment type: Negotiable. We are willing to consider either a full time or part time role (including school hours only contract), dependent on candidate.
Location: The position will be based at our office in the Northern Quarter, Manchester. Some travel to sites across the UK will be necessary.
Salary: £19,000 - £26,000 per annum, dependent on experience and qualifications
