In August 2007 the planning application for the Sheffield West Masterplan was submitted to Sheffield City Council. The scheme had been two years in the gestation following a design/developer competition held by Sheffield City Council in 2005.
The site which sits between Sheffield City Centre and Kelham Island has been opened up by the new ring road and URBED prepared the bid together with Glenn Howells Architects, Landscape Projects and Spring UR, the regeneration arm of Castlemore Securities.
The competition masterplan responded to the lack of urban form in the area by creating a triangular citadel made up of a series of urban blocks but reading as a united whole and with a tower at each of its points, the tallest rising to 30 storeys. URBED have since been coordinating the design team and additional practices have been appointed for each of the buildings in the plan.
In addition to Glenn Howells, Aedas, Allies and Morrison, Chetwoods and Jestico and Whiles have worked on the scheme. A major public consultation exercise was held early in 2006 using the URBED bus and the outline planning application was submitted late summer 2007.
UPDATE 2016: We started work again in 2015, updating the masterplan alongside 5plus Architects and conducting further consultation activity. At the start of July 2016 plans were submitted, with updated visuals to show what the masterplan could look like once built out.
UPDATE 2017: We were delighted to hear in February that the West Bar scheme in Sheffield secured outline planning permission. This is a site we've worked on for many years alongside Urbo and most recently reviewed with 5plus architects. Urbo and delivery partner Peveril Securities Limited will now be working towards detailed planning applications for buildings as well as working to secure investors and occupiers. Work has already started on clearing the site and we look forward to seeing some construction soon!
