The six month project to develop a Quality Charter for Growth in the Cambridge Area, which was sponsored by the Academy for Sustainable Communities, Inspire East, Cambridgeshire Horizons, and English Partnerships, included study tours to the East of England and Freiburg in Southern Germany. The final round table symposium at the Cambridge Science Park brought some 50 leading lights together, who supported the idea of a charter, and came up with proposals for some of the elements. Participants in the process particularly appreciated the chance to meet colleagues from other authorities and sectors, and the opportunity to think creatively about sustainable development, informed by good briefing papers and clear and well-illustrated reports. We have now been commissioned to continue the process with a further six month programme, starting with a workshop to test applying the principles to the southern fringe.
