Hydroponics

One of the partners on the Allotment of the Future is Sow the City. They've been busy building a hydroponics installation that will be on display during the installation in St Ann's Square (from Friday 22nd July to Friday 29th July). Built from PVC pipe and connected to a water tank and pump, they're aiming to showcase a range of crops.

During the week Jon and Kieron of Sow the City will be running a series of 30 minute workshops, explaining how the system works:

Smarter growth and India's urban future

Thursday 19th May, 2016

Dr Nicholas Falk, Founder of URBED, argues that the solutions to our global urbanisation challenges might be found in the rise of ‘Metro Cities’ rather than the expansion of megacities. Dr Falk explores the opportunities for shared smart city learning between the UK and India in addressing these issues in this piece on the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) website.

Trent Basin home user guides

We're currently working on home user guides for the first phase of housing to be delivered at Trent Basin, a riverside development close to the city centre. These homes follow Blueprint's preference for 'fabric first' coupled with gas central heating. In a departure from previous schemes at Green Street and Pitcairn & Hobart (which employed mechanical ventilation and heat recovery), these homes will be naturally ventilated with decentralised mechanical extract.

Trent Basin site visit

The first phase of housing at URBED's Trent Basin masterplan is taking shape. As a Blueprint development, this site is also being monitored against footprint. With the first homes due to complete this summer, we visited site and met with the contractor (Wilmott Dixon) to begin the construction stage assessment of the scheme.

Guardian series on the housing crisis

Monday 9th May, 2016

As part of the Guardian's series on the Housing Crisis, a letter from URBED founding director Nicholas Falk, was published on Thursday 5th May. You can see Nicholas' full letter via the link on the right.

In it he suggests that the threat to our countryside from new housing is made worse by a failure to concentrate new development around key transport nodes. Echoing the sentiments of our Wolfson prize winning essay, Nicholas calls for a commission to allocate the land for new garden cities, rather than relying on ad hoc exceptions.
