For our Christmas greetings, we indulged in a brief review of our work and collaborations In 2016, appreciating the many projects we had the pleasure of working on as well as our clients and collaborators. A small selection as shown in the image below.

Smarter Growth: quality not quantity

In this piece for the RSA, Nicholas Falk argues that the term smarter growth should have wider appeal than inclusive growth, as it uses most people’s concerns to create healthier, safer and better looking places to foster social justice and tackle social exclusion. Instead of turning our back on Europe, we should be doubling our efforts to make connections with cities that face similar challenges. You can find the full article here.

Innovation in housing supply

Friday 4th November, 2016

Vicky Payne, Planner at URBED, will be speaking at this event on Thursday 17th November (17:30 - 19:30) in Leeds. Organised by the Leeds Planning Network and the Centre for Knowledge Exchange, this event focuses on innovation in housing supply. Other speakers include Rob Greenland from Leeds Community Homes and Jonathan Wilson (Development Director at Citu).

Group custom-build

Our latest stage 2 assessment is on Blueprint's Fruit Market development in Nottingham, a group custom-build scheme for three phases of residential units on a vacant site adjacent to the Victoria Leisure Centre and the revitalised Sneinton Market.

The group custom-build model will see home buyers engaged in a collaborative effort to design and build their new homes. This will give buyers input into the design of shared spaces and the customisation of their own home. 

Allotment of the Future featured in the Urban Design Journal

The Autumn 2016 edition of the Urban Design Group Journal focuses on 'Food and the City' and features an article on our involvement in the Allotment of the Future. Written by Helen and Jie, the article explains our design concept before exploring some of the content, in particular looking at themes of alternative protein, growing in urban spaces and the importance of soil.

Dara Screening

Tuesday 18th October, 2016

On the 13th October 2016 URBED and The Samosa were delighted to put on a free screening of the play Dara at 70 Oxford Street Manchester (formally Cornerhouse).  The screening was followed by an open discussion chaired by David Rudlin (Director of URBED) with Anwar Akhtar (Director of The Samosa and production consultant for Dara) and Amina Lone (Hulme Ward Councillor and Director of the Social Action and Research Foundation).

Planning for Posterity - Dr Nicholas Falk

Our Nick has written an article for the Town and Country Planning journal in the September issue, looking at how to plan strategically to join up infrastructure capacity with new development.

The West Bar scheme in Sheffield, designed by URBED and 5plus architects, is a step closer after developer Urbo announced the launch of a joint venture with Peveril Securities, the development arm of Bowmer & Kirkland Group.

New book: Urbanism

Wednesday 12th October, 2016

Urbanism will be launched this month. A collaboration between our David Rudlin, Rob Thompson and Sarah Jarvis. The book is a compedium of seventy five places that have been shortlisted between 2009 and 2013 as part of the Academy's annual awards scheme, which covers great Places, Streets, Neighbourhoods, Towns and Cities.
