Future Fabric Brief:
When Manchester dominated the world's textile trade in the 1880's many of the warehouses and workshops serving the industry were located in the Northern Quarter.
Today the NQ is known as the centre of alternative and bohemian culture in Manchester. Alongside the numerous independent stores, galleries, cafes and bars, the area also still houses fashion designers, agencies, and clothing wholesalers who populate its back streets.
The challenge for the NQ now is to continue to celebrate the area's unique image and character which sets it apart from other area's of the city and resist the pressure of mass consumerism that is dominating in other areas of the city.
Using a variety of techniques we will explore the historic, current and future role of 'fabric' within the Northern Quarter.
