East Ketley in Telford is the fourth of the Millennium Communities promoted by English Partnerships. URBED won the competition to develop the site with Taylor Woodrow and worked for two years on the masterplan with Lifschutz Davidson Associates and JRUD. The site is a moonscape of former mine workings but has been vacant for decades and therefore is also a haven for wildlife. The masterplan for a new neighbourhood of 800 homes was developed in close consultation with the local community including a week-long design charrette in a marquee on site. Outline Planning permission was granted in 2004 and the first phase has recently started on site.
