The report was commissioned by the Stroud Concordat, which comprises Stroud Town Council, Stroud District Council, Gloucestershire Country Council and local businesses. It is based on a review of what smaller towns can do, and consultations with local leisure interests. The report follows on from the town's success in attracting major leisure investment, including a new six screen cinema and bowling complex, which local people put as their top priority. There are an extraordinary number of cafes, and a lively arts scene, and proposals from national multiple Costa Coffee will add to the town's rich mix.The main recommendations comprise:1. Better walks and green links2. Easier parking at night3. Improved taxi service4. Redesigning the gateways5. Destination places to eat6. Joint marketing and a new role for the Subscription RoomsA number of actions are already underway, including proposals for new signing. Stroud District Council is exploring new uses for the ground floor of the town's landmark building, the Stroud Subscription Rooms. Funding is expected from the Heritage Lottery Fund for reopening the canal, which will create a new waterfront on the edge of the town centre, and put the town back on the Cotswold visitor map.For more information contact: Vicky Hancock, Stroud Town Centre Manager, 01453 767894Or Nicholas Falk, URBED, 077 1497 9956
