URBED has been working as the research and design consultants along with Poplar HARCA, Shared Futures CIC and ADE Regeneration to develop a Low Carbon Action Plan for Poplar in partnership with residents and local community stakeholders.During summer 2022, we held 1-1 engagements and hosted a number of workshops along with local stakeholders and residents, speaking with people about climate action in their community, understanding the lived experience of residents, and discussing climate change issues in the neighbourhood. The Poplar Green Futures Low Carbon Action Plan sets out a vision of a future Poplar that improves the health and well-being of residents whilst also addressing the urgent and pressing need to decarbonise systems across the neighbourhood.

The purpose of the Action Plan is to identify existing and active low-carbon projects in Poplar and set out recommendations and a delivery strategy for new actions and projects for the neighbourhood. The Plan will provide research findings and actionable recommendations for different audiences that emerged from community workshop discussions across four low carbon themes: Air Quality & Active Travel, Greenspaces & Local Food Growing, Homes & Renewable Energy, and Resources & Waste Reduction. The project is supported by the Mayor of London’s ‘Future Neighbourhood’ programme, Aberfeldy LLP and Chrisp Street Developments Ltd. It is part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets’ Net Zero Carbon Partnership. To find out more about the Poplar Green Futures project and follow its progress, visit the project blog here.
