In 2004 URBED together with King Sturge were commissioned by Bolton Council, working with existing landowners, to develop a masterplan for the historic Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Locomotive Works in Horwich.

The masterplan sought to reuse the exceptional Locomotive sheds, some of which are a quarter of mile long, by inserting apartments and workspace. Sites were also identified for new build housing as well as a small local centre.

In addition we worked up a proposal in conjunction with an existing waste management company on the site to develop a small eco-industrial park which would attract recycling industries.

Adjacent to the site is Red Moss, a protected but degraded peat bog, similar to Risley Moss but with a more dramatic context. We proposed to develop the location as a setting for a wildlife centre and associated forestry trail.
