URBED were asked to carry out a feasibility study for the Workington Heritage Group on potential improvements to the Grade II* listed Helena Thompson Museum in Workington. This is the local museum for Workington, and contains a permamnent collection covering the town's history and culture - from steel-making to 'Uppies and Downies' street football.
It is currently owned by the local auhtority, but managed by the Heritage Group, who are looking for ways to make the building more financially and environmentally sustainable - as well as fully accessible - without compromising its historical value. Suggested improvments included both the re-arrangement of spaces, and improvements to the building's energy efficiency and building services.
