URBED have been appointed by Patrick Properties Ltd to help prepare a scheme to inform a future planning application on the the Former Hepworth Refractory site in Loxley, Sheffield.  While the site is in the green belt the central part is occupied by a series of derelict factory buildings together with a mill pond, a large area of woodland and the former works bowls club that continues to operate. Sheffield City Council are not prepared to allocate the site but are willing to consider a planning application provided that the scheme is not a bog standard housing development. URBED have therefore been exploring options for a sustainable scheme in terms of energy use, transport and design.

A previous scheme for the site by Bovis homes attracted considerable local opposition and URBED has been working with the local CPRE branch and the city council to engage local people. An initial workshop was held in December 2018 including the parish council and local residents which has fed into a range of ideas being developed for the scheme.

The plan is to reengage with local people through a workshop and further consultation in April 2019 prior to the submission of a full planning application later in the year.
