The report is based on case studies undertaken by a team led by PRP, and is illustrated with a range of examples. URBED managed the research for CABE and the Corporation of London, and also wrote the final report, which includes findings from a number of other studies we have undertaken. The report has been designed to bring together in one place a mass of material in a form that will be useful to both local authorities and house builders, and includes charts on the meaning of density and the density gradient. The main recommendations are:
- understand the economics of the scheme
- build consensus through collaborative working
- invest in design quality
- adopt high standards appropriate for the sitea
- ahieve sustainable urban neighbourhoods.
The ideas in the report are being trialled in a number of innovative schemes, not only in the growth areas of Milton Keynes, for example, and through the Oxford Design Partnership, but also in Yorkshire, where the idea of Town Charters has been pioneered.
