Homebaked in the Guardian

Thursday 14th June, 2012

2up2down got a mention in today's guardian editorial section.

In praise of… Homebaked in Anfield

In the shadow of Liverpool's footballing home lies a remarkable story of how a community can reclaim a space and its narrative

Opposite the Kop, on the corner of Oakfield Road, stands an empty bakery. Few passersby take up the invitation in the window to pop in for a coffee. Goodness knows how many have paused over the sign reading: "Brick by Brick, Loaf by Loaf, We Build Ourselves". Yet inside lies a remarkable story of how a community can reclaim a space and its narrative. For 85 years Mitchells Bakery sold loaves, cakes and pies until – thanks to a regeneration programme gone disastrously wrong – the family was forced to shut up shop at the end of 2010. Yet another tale of de-industrial decline? Not if the Homebaked initiative has anything to do with it. A small group of residents plans to open the bakery by September – and teach local youngsters how to make bread. Look around the premises and you'd think they have got the devil's own job. Talk to the volunteers, though, and you'd hear the kind of energy and enthusiasm that makes anything possible.
