Help support Hulme Community Garden Centre!

Friday 3rd July, 2015

The team have recently launched a kickstarter fund, and we would be really grateful if you could donate to help them grow even bigger and better. Watch their awesome campaign video here and please read more about this inspirational place below, plus there are rewards, something about naked gardening...!

For 15 years Hulme Community Garden Centre’s vibrant site, incorporating a thriving garden centre and inspiring community gardens has brought the community together through gardening and provided a vital green space to enjoy, relax in, learn from and be part of. Offering a year-round range of volunteering and training opportunities; supported sessions for those with learning disabilities and mental health issues; toddler groups; school visits and much more there is never a dull moment! Each week up to 100 volunteers engage: aged from 6 months to 83 years old, from a wide range of backgrounds, both local and not so local, who all help to develop, maintain and manage our green oasis.  Volunteers can also gain an insight into how a garden centre works, helping to produce plants for sale and learning organic methods of plant care and pest control. In a typical year we deliver over 10,000 opportunities to encourage people to grow their own food, green their own communities, lead active and healthier lifestyles and improve their life chances.

We are able to thrive because Manchester City Council and our centre users have encouraged us to develop the site, recently allowing us to take ownership of the adjacent car park. We are about to sign a 20-year lease allowing us to continue to develop and grow – we would like to eventually build a large multipurpose eco building to house a new shop, offices and volunteer hub.

For the next few weeks are we aiming to raise awareness of the centre, the work that we do and the challenges that we face by raising £15,000 through a Kickstarter campaign to allow us to continue the development of our site extension. Kickstarter is a crowdfunding platform that offers easy and quick ways to get involved and support us. Rewards range from handmade paper weights through naked gardening calendars (!) and great deals on site rental for parties and events.

Over the next month we need to share our campaign far and wide and encourage people to pledge…there are lots of rewards on offer ranging from £5 to £5,000 and all of them are guaranteed to bring a little bit of Hulme sunshine into your lives!

Watch our video here - it’s a great introduction to what we do here at the centre as well as clearly demonstrating how your ongoing support enables us to consistently achieve great outcomes for individuals and create positive impact in our community. Please watch our video and if you like what we do, think about making a pledge, even if you don't pledge then please share the link and spread the word. You can make a pledge using the links at the side of the Kickstarter page and if we don't hit our target of £15,000 by July 26th no money will be taken from your account.

Please do get in touch if you have any ideas of how to boost the campaign or would like to get involved or, better still, call in for brew…you never know there might be cake!

From all at Hulme Community Garden Centre!
