Jie Lu

Jie Lu has recently joined URBED as an Urban Designer, after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a Masters in Urban Design, for which she received a Distinction. Jie had been previously working at URBED as an intern in 2015, developing her Urban Design skills and helping on a number of projects in the ofice.  Jie’s background is based around three different but strong related majors (Environmental Art Design, Landscape Design and Urban Design) and this has allowed Jie to treat design integrally from big scale to small scale, from marco-construction to detail design. She discovered her interest in using Urban Design as a strategy to help the city develop in a more sustainable way and help people to build a high quality life at the same time. Her studio work Living with Nature involved producing a design which transformed an industrial area into a mixed use residential area using the existing nature resource. Jie's final thesis project How to use waste food to build a healthy Sheffield developed from the idea of “eating from the bin”. The main objective of this work is to promote new ways of using discarded food waste. Using a series of strategies such as reuse, reconfiguration and respatialisation to re-position food waste in the society. In a way, using food waste as a medium to empower the society to eat differently and healthy.
