Gervase Mangwana

Gervase became involved with URBED in 2015 through its collaboration with Carbon Coop to develop a whole house retrofit assessment tool. He now carries out assessments using “My Home Energy Planner”, working as a sub-contractor to URBED, and has also helped in the development and testing of the online tool.

Gervase entered the field of low energy building after studying a Masters in Renewable Energy and the Built environment at the Centre for Alternative Technology in 2009. During the course he realised the need to focus on the energy impact of the existing housing stock. After the course Gervase did further training in building applications of infra-red thermal imaging and airtightness testing.

Since then he has worked exclusively in the retrofit sector. An early LEAF project with Chorlton Refurb assessed the various different dwelling types in his locale and gave him a good insight into the differences between householders and their attitudes. In 2014 he carried out a deep retrofit of his own property achieving 80% reductions in measured gas consumption whilst significantly improving comfort and air quality. He now trades as Waxwing Energy, which acts as a consultancy through to installer of insulation and airtightness measures, with the aim of helping clients to understand their path through the retrofit maze.

In his previous life Gervase was a dj and producer of electronic music visiting nearly 40 countries in a 15 year career. He fears he will never be able to claw back the massive carbon footprint from these trips but the memories are fond.
